The University of Tennessee, Knoxville becomes a Smart Trips Sponsor

The University of Tennessee, Knoxville has found another way to “make orange green,” as the slogan of their sustainability campaign commands. In September, they became a Bronze Level Smart Trips sponsor.

Since the early days of the Smart Trips program, UT has been a source of support and participation. Students, faculty, and staff have logged thousands of clean commutes.

Because of the university’s dense, urban campus, those trips range in mode from carpool and transit to biking, walking, and more.

Why did UT decide to take the next step towards sustainable transportation on campus?

“The stats,” says Preston Jacobsen, Sustainability Manager. “It’s one thing to promote sustainability as a culture. Tracking and measuring it is a whole other ballgame. The statistics Smart Trips collects will help us determine whether we’re hitting our benchmarks.”

UT’s Bronze sponsorship gives them administrative access to the Smart Trips online logging system. From there, Preston can track UT’s travel trends: emissions curbed, calories burned, and dollars saved.

In addition to this, Smart Trips will have an even greater presence on campus – both digitally and in person. You’ll see us at their Earth Day and environmental fairs, on blogs, and in email campaigns. We’re excited to increase UT’s already large membership and make an even bigger impact on local traffic congestion and air quality.
