Emergency Ride Home

Smart Trips Emergency Ride Home program is available to any commuter in the following counties: Knox, Blount, Loudon, Anderson, Jefferson, and Sevier. Commuters must Enroll in the Smart Trips program for service eligibility.

You may get an Emergency Ride Home if:

  • You walked, bicycled, carpooled, vanpooled, or rode the bus for your commute to work that day,

and

  • You or a family member becomes ill, or
  • You unexpectedly need to work past your normal quitting time at the request of your supervisor, or
  • You missed your regular ride due to an unexpected change in your work schedule.
  • The voucher is only to be used to get home (or to your park-and-ride lot) from work. These vouchers may not be used for your trip to work. You may not make any stops during your ERH trip.

How do I arrange an Emergency Ride Home?

After enrolling Smart Trips, you will receive a packet in the mail with your Emergency Ride Home vouchers and instructions for use.

Voucher Conditions: The Emergency Ride Home vouchers are non-transferable, meaning they are for your use only. You may not give them to a friend, family member, or co-worker. In addition, the vouchers may not be sold.

Smart Trips, a program of the Knoxville Regional Transportation Planning Organization, serves the urbanized areas of Knox, Blount, Sevier, Jefferson, and Anderson Counties. The Smart Trips Program is funded by the US Department of Transportation, the Federal Highway Administration, the Tennessee Department of Transportation, Knox County, the ALCOA Foundation and Tennessee Valley Bicycles.

Smart Trips Waiver of Liability
Participation in Smart Trips programs such as carpool, vanpool, riding the bus, biking, walking to work, and the Emergency Ride Home (ERH) program is an individual decision. Participants are completely responsible for the operation of carpools and participation in any Smart Trips programs. SMART TRIPS AND THE KNOXVILLE REGIONAL TRANSPORTATION PLANNING ORGANIZATION SHALL HAVE NO RESPONSIBILITY OR LIABILITY FOR ANY CLAIMS, EXPENSES, OR DAMAGES RESULTING FROM ANY INDIVIDUAL'S PARTICIPATION IN A CARPOOL, VANPOOL, BUS, BIKE, WALK, OR ERH PROGRAMS.
